Krispy Kreme lives up to the Hype!
If you’re in Lagos and you haven’t heard that Krispy Kreme is in town, then you’re probably really living under a rock or your family and friends aren’t nice. (Just kidding!!!). The PR/adverts for the launch of their doughnuts has been major, from doing doughnut drops at various offices to handing out doughnuts in traffic and even having a collaboration with Uber where you get doughnut delivered to you for free. (I must confess, it was a struggle to get an Uber that day! Though I was able to get a box after several trials, many people didn’t.)
For those of you that might have never heard of Krispy Kreme and are now wondering what I’m going on about, here’s a brief background for you. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is an American doughnut and coffeehouse company chain famous for their original glazed doughnuts, they have a presence in 33 countries around the world already, making Nigeria the 34th country they are launching in! (massive presence, Init?)
I had the opportunity to attend their press/social media influencers event before the actual launch and it was all shades of awesome! I got to meet popular actor and presenter Bollylomo! (obviously, I’m a fan)
Venue: The event was held at Ikeja City Mall, where their first store is located. The placement of the store is strategic, as it’s one of the stores upfront just by the Chicken Republic. So, even if you’re a new customer you can sight it just as you’re parking or approaching the mall.
Customer Service: The event was well organised with no hassles getting in. The staff were really nice and friendly. They seemed genuinely happy to be there as they attended to you with smiley faces and kept checking to make sure you were okay. They also made sure to clear up asap and left no messy trays laying around (Cleanliness is key!).
Taste: They are launching 16 varieties of the doughnuts (now, you have no excuse not to stop by every other day, enough flavours to try). I was able to try out three; the Red velvet, Oreo cookies & kreme and the Caramel kreme crunch. They were all so soft, fluffy and the ‘melt in your mouth’ kind of doughnuts. The Caramel kreme crunch was my favourite as it had caramel filling in it too, I wasn’t expecting that! So it was a pleasant surprise. The caramel gushing out, just the way I like it!
L to R: Oreo Cookies & Kreme, Red velvet and Caramel kreme Crunch
For drinks, they had hot and cold options and I went with the Strawberry Frozze (a cold drink). I think this was probably the best decision ever and I would be going back for more! It was so refreshing, it had this creamy taste almost like you’re having a milkshake and the strawberry flavour wasn’t overpowering.
Ambience: The setting is quite nice, comfortable with good lighting (for selfies😊) and gives you a “hang out with friends” vibe. One thing that stood out for me, is how open they are with their production process. There’s a glass that demarcates the seating area from the “doughnut theatre” and customers get to see a bit of the process especially the part where the doughnuts go through the “glaze waterfall” to get their signature original glazed doughnut!
There was also this tall doughnut tower which I think was for decoration purposes only. It was a beautiful sight to behold but with every fly that perched on it, the naija girl in me kept thinking of how they would have to trash everything after the event and it broke my heart. Lol!
Price: The prices here are relatively affordable in my opinion, one original glazed doughnut costs N450 while the assorted one goes for N550 and that’s pretty good for the quality you get.
The official launch was on Saturday the 10th of March at 7am and they gave out prizes to the first 300 customers on the queue.
By the way, there’s word of them opening another store on the Island sometime in May and if you’re now wondering when you would get to indulge in this awesome doughnut experience because you’re not in Lagos, don’t fret, they intend to open 20 stores in Nigeria over the course of 5 years (They mean business and they are here to stay 😊).
Krispy Kreme doughnuts prides itself on high quality of their products and assurance of giving their customers the same awesome taste all over the world and they made it clear to us on that day. I’m really excited that they decided to branch out to Nigeria and can’t wait to go back there!
