Luckily, safety and hygiene has found its way into Lagos Food stores. Last year, I discovered this store….Reds & Greens and was quite pleased when I got in and realized they sell variety of meat cuts, vegetables like bell peppers and cherry tomatoes which I don’t find lying around in local markets. The store is run by the friendliest of people…Isioma, that also got me hooked. It’s not every day you find a neat, fly-less, aggressive-butcher-free meat store.
Long story short, I called Isioma some time last week to ask if I could come in to tour the store and she happily fixed me up on a date *chuckles*
I got there in the morning when it was less busy and had a talk with her about the blog and my chef dreams.
A price list so you see how much what is…prices are blurred out as they are subject to change but trust me, they are very affordable. I was informed that one of their goals is to meet International food handling standard yet sell at an affordable rate to different categories of end-users (small & large scales). I did not fully understand the till I saw this…
Next, the butcher section…
I got to see different cutters for fish, meat, turkey, bones. Make no mistake, this is some serious business, the processes followed are systematic and thorough. Mr. Korede gave me a quick lesson and posed for pictures.
Next, Mr Gabriel aka The Chicken Man was bringing out roast turkey for display. I followed him into a cold room for some shots *brain freeze* The camera lens even got blurred from mist. There are 3 cold rooms but I only had the bravery for two…I still don’t know how Mr. Gabriel smiled for a picture in this challenging time.
I made it out alive back to Isioma, she further explained that they follow a no-waste policy. Every part of meat is utilized. And that they also deliver to save customers the stress of coming to the store. I noticed a charity box (I don’t think I give back enough *sigh*) when our conversation got paused as she had to receive payment for a pork loin from a customer…
I thanked her for the experience and just as I was about to leave, I was told about the suya & bbq grills every day apart from tuesdays…planning a treat for myself on friday *giggles* Walked out impressed and took a second look at the building…absolutely neat environment!
